Draft · awaiting legal review
This text was written against what the site actually does, but it has not yet been reviewed by a qualified adviser. It is published here so it can be read and corrected. Until that review is complete the page is withheld from search, and you should not rely on it.
The short version
This site stores four things on your device, and only two of them exist before you make a choice. Those two are a record of your theme and a record of your cookie decision. Neither is a cookie and neither identifies you.
The other two are cookies set by Google Analytics, and they appear only if you choose Accept. If you decline, or ignore the banner, no analytics script is loaded and no cookie is set.
What is stored
This table is generated from the same values the code uses, so it cannot drift out of date without the build failing.
| Name | Type | Category | What it is for | How long | Set by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| devtools.theme | Local storage | Strictly necessary | Remembers whether you chose the light or dark theme. Written only if you use the theme control. | Until you clear site data | devtools.codes |
| devtools.consent | Local storage | Strictly necessary | Records the choice you made in the cookie banner, when you made it, and which version of this policy it applied to. | 12 months, after which we ask again | devtools.codes |
| _ga | Cookie | Analytics | Distinguishes one visitor from another so visits can be counted. | 2 years | |
| _ga_7C1J0LWZZ4 | Cookie | Analytics | Keeps session state for this specific Analytics property. | 2 years |
Cookies and local storage are not the same thing
The banner is called a cookie banner because that is what people call it, but the distinction matters for what actually happens on your device.
A cookie is sent to a server with every request. Local storage is not: it stays in your browser and is only read by code running on the page. Your theme and your cookie decision use local storage, which is why they never reach anyone, including us.
The only true cookies on this site are the two Google sets for Analytics.
Strictly necessary
These cannot be switched off, because without them the site cannot do what you have asked. If your cookie decision were not remembered, you would be asked again on every page. If your theme were not remembered, the site would forget it the moment you navigated.
Both are stored under the strictly necessary exemption in the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, which does not require consent. Neither is shared with anyone.
Analytics
Google Analytics helps us see which tools get used and which pages fail, so we know what to build and fix next. It tells us that a page was viewed, not who viewed it.
No tool input or output is ever included in an analytics event. Analytics does not run at all on the Secret Scanner or its two guide pages, whatever you choose here.
Nothing loads until you accept. This is not the common arrangement where a tag loads immediately and waits for permission to use cookies. On this site, no request is made to Google at all until you have said yes.
Advertising
There are none. No advertising script is loaded on any page of this site, and no advertising cookie is set. The Advertising option in the banner currently controls nothing and exists only so the choice is in place before any advertising is introduced.
If that changes, this page will be updated first and the banner will ask you again.
Changing your mind
Use the control below, or the Cookie preferences link in the footer of every page. Turning Analytics off takes effect immediately: measurement stops, the script is removed, and the cookies are deleted. No reload is needed.
How long your choice lasts
We keep your decision for 12 months. After that the banner returns, showing what you chose last time, and asks again.
It also returns early if we change the services we use. A decision you made about Google Analytics is not consent for something else, so we ask again rather than carrying it over.
If your browser blocks storage, the banner will say so. Your choice then applies to that visit only, and the site treats the failure as a refusal rather than as agreement.
Browser controls
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies and clear site data, and those controls override anything on this page. Clearing site data for devtools.codes removes all four items listed above, including your theme and your cookie decision, so the banner will appear again on your next visit.
